It’s that time of year when the apples are abundant and my recipes start calling. Apple crisp? Grain free? Uh, yes please!
So we have this apple tree…
Okay, truth? It is really my neighbor’s. BUT a good 1/4 of it hangs over our fence and shares loads of apples with us (and sadly our compost bin) every year. This year, my oldest son and I knew we needed to make an apple crisp. It couldn’t be any crisp – it had to be a grain free apple crisp! I am just starting to explore grain free, and even if you are not paleo/primal – the nutty flavor from the almond flour gives this crisp lots of depth and interest. I am sure you will swoon over it. And so will your kids 😉
The recipe: it is actually a family favorite. My mother-in-law has made this recipe for us, and I have made it many times as well. It is nothing short of amazing! My family and friends always ask for the recipe every time. Another truth? I was pretty scared to try to recreate it with grain free flours, unrefined sugars, as well as some good ol’ organic butter and certified sustainable and fair trade palm shortening…. but try I did.
I paired it with some Vanilla Almond Milk ice cream, what?!? I know! Soooo good! Check out the images and recipe, then take a stab at making it! Let me know in the comments below how it turns out!

This is a family favorite, recreated with the goodness of grain free flours, without sacrificing flavor! Enjoy! Remember that oven times may vary, so check this often. Nut flours can burn easily, so if your oven runs hot, keep a close eye on it or turn down the heat. I chose to use butter and palm shortening, but you could just do all butter (1 stick instead of half a stick). Also, if you are not grain free and want to create this - the traditional family recipe calls for 1 cup of flour of your choice. You could try to do 1/2 cup whole grain flour and 1/2 cup of oats. Best served with friends and family 😉

- 3 cups Organic Apples Peeled, cored, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
- 1 tbsp Real Maple Syrup
- 1/4 cup Coconut Flour
- 3/4+ cup Almond Flour
- 1/2 cup Coconut Palm Sugar
- 1 tsp Baking Powder Aluminum free
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon plus a dash for sprinkling the apples
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1 packet Stevia SweetLeaf brand
- 1/4 cup Butter Softened, unsalted
- 1/4 cup Palm shortening Fair trade/sustainably sourced (Nutiva)
- 1 egg
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Peel, core and dice your apples. I like a full 3 cups. This took 5 small organic apples in my test kitchen. Place them in an 8 x 8 baking dish.
- Drizzle the apples with Real Maple Syrup and a dash or two of cinnamon. Stir the mixture.
- In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients.
- Whisk your egg in a separate mixing bowl, and then add the softened butter and palm shortening and combine.
- Now add the wet mix to the dry mix and combine. I use a fork for this step. If you have ever made a crumb topping, that is what this texture should be like. If it seems too wet, this is where the + comes in for the almond flour. Add a little more if needed, but it will be somewhat wet since this is made without traditional flour.
- Take the crisp topping and crumble it over the apples in the casserole dish.
- Place the crisp in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes. Remember oven temperatures vary, so be sure to check on your crisp halfway and adjust as needed. Once you have made this one time, you can make a note of the exact times for your oven. Enjoy!
P.S. I love to recreate recipes with cleaned up goodness. So, if you have one you want to send my way, DO! I will give it a go, and if it is a success, I will test it a few times before I share or post it.
